John, today marks twenty-one years since the vile terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
That day began like any other, going to work or school under a bright late-summer sun. We didn’t know that that morning would change the world, and our understanding of it, forever.
When terrorists drove commercial jets into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a farmer’s field in rural Pennsylvania, they were not just striking the United States. They were attacking the universal values of liberty, democracy, and freedom. But, they did not succeed, as evil never can.
Today, we remember the 2,977 innocent souls whose lives were cut short on that tragic day. We give thanks to the heroic first responders whose sacrifice and dedication spared us even further loss. And, we recommit ourselves to the service of our brilliant, yet fragile, democracy.
Sincerely,
–Hala Ayala
