Friend,
Today we pause to remember the act of senseless violence that forever changed America. We mourn the nearly 3,000 lives we lost – parents, coworkers and friends who may be gone but will never be forgotten.
Twenty-one years ago today, I was at Orlando International Airport commanding the Orlando Police Department’s airport division when I heard the shocking news of the attacks. I will never forget the devastation and heartbreak of that day, and how it changed how we looked at the world.
As we've continued our work to keep America safe, I have often thought of the first responders who stood in the face of danger to rescue others – the law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs and more. Their courage and selflessness is a lesson for us all – and we are forever grateful for their sacrifice.
I hope that every person will join me today in taking a moment of silence and saying a prayer for the families of the victims, for peace and for the safety and security of all Americans.
In solemn reflection,
Congresswoman Val Demings
