Hi friend,
Today, we honor the nearly 3,000 killed on September 11. As families gather to grieve at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, I will never forget that painful day in American history.
I was running for mayor--literally. After finishing military service in the US Air Force, I filed as a candidate for mayor of my hometown, Snow Hill. To increase health and wellness awareness, I started morning jogs around the town as part of my “running” for mayor campaign.
Upon returning from a morning jog, I turned on the television and heard the breaking news that a plane had flown into the north tower of the World Trade Center and, minutes later, another one into the south tower of the World Trade Center. As news reports continued, first responders were trapped trying to help the innocent. As a former Air Force mortuary officer, these attacks were one of the most horrific.
Days afterward, I continued with my morning runs for mayor, this time carrying the American flag. I remember the car horns honking. No matter where we were on that day, it brought us closer together as Americans, and it helped to renew our sense of community and service.
Around the country, we pause today to remember those who lost their lives, to continue our sense of service, and to be ever mindful of the need to protect our democracy. While terrorists resorted to extremism with hopes of breaking us, September 11 reminds us of the power of unity, especially in our current political environment. We must carry the American flag daily, preserve our freedom, and never forget September 11.
With best regards,
Don Davis
