This isn’t the typical email you get from us. You see, it’s wildfire season in California, and the community where I began as School Board member and as an organizer is in danger.
When I was running for Congress, I spent every day talking about the impact of climate change on this part of the world. We were seeing our homeowner’s insurance policies canceled, mega-fires were destroying massive amounts of forest and wildlands, and a mega-drought and record high temperatures has only made this worse.
And then the Mosquito Fire started.
In just two days, this fire has grown from a small local fire to tens of thousands of acres burning with 0% containment during a heat wave with temperatures reaching record levels. This fire is already a mega-fire and shows no sign of slowing down. And now my fellow progressive organizers and friends are being evacuated and the town where we raised our sons is a mere 12 miles from this terrifying blaze.
I realize this isn’t the first fire, and sadly, it won’t be the last. But I’m asking you for your help. Can you donate to the fire relief funds organized by the two counties affected by this disaster?
FEMA has already declared it a disaster area, but people are leaving now with nothing more than they can carry and they don’t know when they’ll be allowed to go home again… or if they will.
The El Dorado Community Foundation and Placer County Community Foundation are on the ground and know how to get these funds in the hands of those in need because they have been at the forefront of getting people relief during these climate disasters.
Your donation could mean the difference between a family sleeping in their car and them having a safe place to sleep tonight.
