Hello,
Impeachment is one of the two most grave powers of Congress — the other is the power to declare war. For just the third time in our nation’s history, the House of Representatives has voted to impeach a president.
This decision doesn't come lightly.
Trump's disregard for the rule of law puts the very foundation of our democracy at risk, rejecting the very idea that a president could be required by Congress to explain and justify his actions.
Which brings us to the moment and the choice we have before us.
This not about politics, this is about patriotism. During this very somber moment for our democracy, we don't take this step to divide, though some will say otherwise. There is a very clear difference between division and clarification.
Slavery once divided our nation, but it was emancipators who rose up to clarify that all men were created equal. Suffrage once divided the nation, but women rose up to clarify that all voices must be heard in our democracy. Jim Crow once divided the nation, but civil rights champions rose up to clarify that all are entitled to equal protection under the law.
What was true then can be true now, which is why today we rose up to clarify that under the United States Constitution, no one is above the law.
This is a turning point in our efforts to hold this president accountable, but there will be much more work to be done and many more important days to come as the Senate holds their trial. But with your support, we will emerge from this sobering moment in our history stronger than ever.
Will you stand with me and Democrats in the fight to hold Trump accountable? Add your name now so I know you’re standing with me.
