The last time Republicans flipped both chambers of Congress in the same midterm year was 1994. That year, Newt Gingrich released his “Contract with America,” a conservative wish list of proposals that foreshadowed a devastating midterm loss for Democrats. This year, the GOP and Kevin McCarthy are trying to recreate that success with their new “Commitment to America” agenda. John, we can’t let this happen again.
If Republicans flip both chambers of Congress this year as they did in 1994, all the progress we’ve made so far would be in danger. The GOP would implement a federal ban on abortion, reverse student loan forgiveness, and in McCarthy’s own words, “put an end to ‘Build Back Better’” and the record low unemployment that it brought.
Over the last few months, our Democratic majority has been hard at work for the American people. Job growth is strong across the entire economy, we passed the first major gun violence legislation in over a decade, jumpstarted our green economy by investing in climate change and infrastructure, and relieved up to $20,000 of student debt from millions of Americans.
If we lose just one seat in the Senate and fail to hold the House, McCarthy and the GOP will block everything we attempt and start rolling back our progress.
