“I, Chris Pappas, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”
The last few weeks have been some of the busiest down in Washington since I took my oath of office in January.
In the last two weeks alone, the House passed legislation that implements 12 weeks of paid family leave for federal employees, allows Medicare to leverage our buying power and negotiate lower drug prices, phases out the military’s use of firefighting foam that contains dangerous PFAS chemicals, and fully funds the government. The Veterans’ Affairs Committee, which I serve on, conducted a roundtable on the effects of PFAS exposure on veterans and their families, and my other committee, Transportation and Infrastructure, held a hearing on the ongoing safety concerns with the Boeing 737 MAX 8.
And earlier today we voted to send two articles of impeachment to the U.S. Senate. The founders of our nation created a system of checks and balances -- a system where no one is above the law, including the President of the United States.
When I ran for this office, I promised that I would work with the president when it was in the interest of the people of New Hampshire and stand up to him when he was wrong. Later this week, I will continue to keep that promise by voting to approve the USMCA -- a bipartisan trade agreement negotiated by the Trump administration with Mexico and Canada. This is how our democracy is supposed to work.
While I have not spent the last 11 1/2 months focused on impeaching Donald Trump as all the TV and digital attack ads would have you believe, I do take my responsibilities to support and defend the Constitution very seriously and could not sit idly by while the president blatantly abused his power and obstructed Congress.
If you support the work we have been doing in the House to pass meaningful legislation to improve the lives of everyday Americans while also standing up to hold President Trump accountable for his actions, I hope you’ll step up today.
With today’s vote on the articles of impeachment, the target on my back will only get bigger. I need your help to fight back against the avalanche of negative ads and mail that are on their way. We have our year-end deadline coming up in less than two weeks, and we need to raise $4,250 by tomorrow to stay on track to hit our goal.
