Before casting my vote today on impeachment, I read the articles, studied the evidence and listened to public testimony in hearings from credible witnesses who have served this country with honor. The facts are not in dispute.
President Trump abused the power of his office by soliciting foreign interference in our 2020 election. He withheld military aid and a White House meeting from Ukraine while asking for an investigation into his political opponent. And he obstructed Congress by refusing to cooperate with the investigation, including defying subpoenas for all documents and testimony.
I did not come to Congress to impeach a President, and it was with an understanding of the gravity of this situation that I cast my vote to impeach President Trump today. But I swore an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States. Congress cannot be silent in the face of a dangerous President who compromises our national security, endangers the Constitution, continually violates his oath of office and betrays our trust. We cannot be complicit in a deliberate erosion and attack on our republic.
I hold a deep belief and faith in our country and its values. As the world watched today, Democrats stood sadly alone in fulfilling our obligation to uphold the Constitution and guard against future abuses of power, even at the highest levels of government.
No one is above the law.
