Over the past several months, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has doubled down on his anti-immigrant agenda and spent over $12 million dollars to bus migrants and asylum seekers, including children, to Washington D.C., New York City, and most recently Chicago. Arizona's Governor Doug Ducey recently joined him in this busing scheme. Our Executive Director, Gladis Molina Alt, discussed how this intentionally unwelcoming practice harms people seeking protection in a televised interview. To learn more, read our statement calling for support for organizations welcoming migrants (where many of our staff and volunteers are lending their time.)

For years, unaccompanied immigrant children held in federal government custody have only been guaranteed two telephone calls per week, 10 minutes each, to family members. But for many children, this minimum standard is inadequate to receive the support they need or to maintain and develop stable relationships with parents or caregivers while they are in custody. Moreover, limited contact with family and loved ones can further compound the trauma they may have experienced on their journey to the United States or while in custody. Our latest report explains why the government’s restriction on child contact with family is not in the best interests of children and calls for a new policy of unlimited contact for children and their families.

CELEBRATING OUR FELLOWS

This past August, our inaugural cohort of Elizabeth Frankel Fellows completed their 10-week fellowship with the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights. Traveling from as far as California and Chicago to work out of our New York office, the three fellows served as Child Advocates, drafting a report on the racist underpinnings of immigration policies, and traveling to the U.S.-Mexico border to meet with our Rio Grande Valley team and allies.
