You've probably seen the headlines: the recently passed federal Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) will lower the costs of energy, health care, and prescription drugs and bring manufacturing and supply chain home, creating and protecting millions of good-paying jobs across the nation.??
But what does it mean for Michigan? I see the IRA as an opportunity for Michigan to compete for jobs and investment and cement our leadership role in the manufacturing sector.?
That?s why this week, I signed an executive directive to ensure we take advantage of all the resources in the IRA ? creating and protecting hundreds of thousands of good-paying manufacturing jobs right here in Michigan and strengthening our economy.?
With this directive, we will use the IRA to build on our legendary manufacturing heritage, unleash the potential of our people and businesses, and make Michigan even more competitive against other states in the mobility and electrification sectors.??
I am so proud of the work we have done to bring home a $7 billion investment from GM, building electric vehicles and batteries, and a new facility from high-tech manufacturer SK Siltron bringing the semiconductor supply chain from China to Michigan. Ford announced production of the first-ever fully electric F-150, with a $2 billion investment creating thousands of jobs across plants. LG Energy invested $1.7 billion in Holland and KLA, CSS, Calumet Electronics, and Hemlock Semiconductor Operations? have all made major investments throughout the state, helping us create a robust semiconductor supply chain. My new executive directive will build on these efforts. ?
Together, we can create and protect hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs here in Michigan, build and retool our factories, surge clean energy production, and do what we do best?put the world on wheels. The IRA?s job-creating investments will build on our economic momentum, keeping unemployment low and growth high.??
I will work with anyone and compete with everyone to make sure Michiganders can see and feel the benefits of the IRA. Let?s keep putting Michigan first.?
Gretchen Whitmer Governor of Michigan
