The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (WDEQ) has received a request from the United States Bureau of Land Management for State certification of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Nationwide Permit #14, for discharge of dredged or fill material to the Sweetwater River at Sweetwater Guard Station Campground near South Pass, Wyoming. The purpose of the project is to create a low-water crossing for recreationists along the Continental Divide Trail. This segment of the Sweetwater River is designated Class 1 where point source discharges are prohibited except for storm water and construction related discharges. This certification will require meeting the provisions in Chapter 1, Section 7(b) of the WDEQ Water Quality Rules and Regulations, which allows these discharges under certain circumstances.
Proposed activities within the Sweetwater River include hand placement of eleven pre-formed concrete stepping blocks to allow for dry passage across the river during summer flows. To do this will require the placement of approximately 1.1 cubic yards of imported fill material in the river. No wetlands will be impacted.
Requests for information about the proposed water quality certification should be directed to Eric Hargett by email ([email protected]) or phone (307-777-6701).
