Gov. Justice and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources announced Tuesday that the annual National Hunting and Fishing Days Celebration would be held today and Sunday, Sept. 10-11, at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in Glen Jean, WV. Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to the Summit Bechtel Reserve in Fayette County for West Virginia’s Celebration of the largest outdoor hunting and fishing show in the state.

Justice announced Friday that, in honor of Sept. 11, 2001, and in honor of all West Virginia heroes, past and present, he has issued a proclamation officially declaring this coming Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, as “Heroes Day” in West Virginia. This annual observance celebrates the bravery and sacrifice of first responders in West Virginia; including firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical services workers, and 911 telecommunicators.

Gov. Justice announced Friday that he has issued a proclamation declaring Saturday, September 10, 2022, as Bob Huggins Day in West Virginia. West Virginia men’s basketball head coach Bob Huggins will receive basketball’s highest honor on Saturday when he is enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.

New Children’s Crisis Center to provide a safe alternative in West Virginia ([link removed])

Justice and the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that DHHR will build a new Children’s Crisis Center in Elkins, West Virginia that will offer a safe alternative from the use of hospital emergency departments and hotel rooms to address the needs of children who may be experiencing a behavioral health crisis and have been removed from their homes.

Home and community-based service providers to see increase in payments ([link removed])

Gov. Justice and the DHHR announced Friday that due to the critical need for home health care workers of West Virginia’s most vulnerable residents, DHHR’s Medicaid program will designate additional federal funds to increase rates for Home and Community-Based Service Providers.

“These providers have stepped up to make sure West Virginia’s senior citizens and individuals with disabilities have the care that they need,” said Gov. Justice. “We appreciate all the work they do, and especially during this pandemic. In total, this is an investment of approximately $240 million.”

WV overdose deaths showing improvement ([link removed])

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Vital Statistics System has released a report ([link removed]) showing West Virginia is one of six states with an improvement in decreasing the percentage of overdose deaths from March 2021 through March 2022. CDC reports that West Virginia is down 3.63% in overdose deaths during this period. The only other state showing a better improvement is Virginia at 6.69%.

West Virginia Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy – South Class 58 graduates 57 cadets ([link removed])

The West Virginia National Guard’s Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy – South program, located in Montgomery, graduated 57 cadets as a part of Class 58 today at Haddad Riverfront Park in Charleston. Throughout the 22-week program, cadets provided more than 4,642 hours of community service through 42 different projects, a recognized value of more than $139,042.00.

New partnership strives to strengthen West Virginia's teacher pipeline ([link removed])

The West Virginia Department of Education is partnering with Study.com, a national EdTech platform, to assist aspiring educators in preparing and passing the Praxis exam. This test is required to earn a teaching credential in West Virginia. The collaboration is a part of Study.com’s Keys to the Classroom Program, and the company has committed to donating 400 comprehensive, cost-free sets of digital materials and resources to students enrolled in the Grow You Own WV Pathway to Teaching initiative.

WVDOH makes temporary repairs to Patrick Street Bridge in Charleston ([link removed])

West Virginia Division of Highways bridge crews made temporary repairs to a railing on the Patrick Street Bridge in Charleston after an ambulance crashed through the railing earlier this week. The ambulance jumped the curb and crashed through the railing late Monday, Sept. 5, 2022. The ambulance came to rest with its front wheels hanging off of the bridge over Kanawha Boulevard. No one was seriously injured.
