In 2020, Congress passed the Merchant Mariners of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act to recognize the merchant mariners for their courage and contributions during the war. One of those mariners, Burnie Lewis, lives in Marianna. His medal was delivered to him last week, and I got to sit and talk with him about his role in the war effort and his life in Arkansas after the Allied victory.
Veterans are a reminder that the freedoms many Americans take for granted are not without sacrifice. Our Greatest Generation stormed the beaches of Normandy, fought on islands in the South Pacific and marched across Europe to defeat tyranny. Right here in the First District, we have brave men and women who have put their lives on hold, and many times their lives on the line, so their fellow Americans can be free. We owe them our utmost gratitude and respect.
