Dear Friend, I hope you, your family, and your loved ones have been keeping cool despite the record-high temperatures in San Diego. If you can, please set your thermostat to 78 degrees, unplug unused electronics, and turn off unnecessary lights during flex alerts to reduce your energy usage and prevent rotating power outages. Here are locations of free, air-conditioned Cool Zones in San Diego. And if you’re 60 years of age and older, living with disabilities, on a limited income, or homebound, you can call 211 for a free electric fan or transportation to a Cool Zone. It’s been a busy week for me in San Diego, but I’ve been so excited to get out into the community, meet with constituents – from high schoolers to military leaders – and host a virtual town hall with Congressman Scott Peters about how to stop the spread of Mpox.

I hosted a virtual town hall with Congressman Peters, public health officials, and community leaders this week to give an update about the status of Mpox in our community and how we can stop the spread. If you missed it, you can watch the entire town hall here.

I visited Naval Base San Diego and heard more from base leadership about their barracks, base housing, and child care support – and what more we can be doing together to serve our servicemembers and their families.
San Diego’s military families deserve better than 4,000-person child care waitlists and moldy homes. This year, I secured a pay increase for child care workers who serve military families and greater investment in military child care maintenance. I’ve also introduced the Military Housing Readiness Council Act, bipartisan legislation to ensure oversight and accountability on safe housing conditions for servicemembers and military families. But there’s more work to do, and I will continue to fight in Congress to ensure that our servicemembers and military families have the support they need.

Registering to vote – and actually voting – is an important way to raise your voice, stand up for the issues that you care about, and make decisions about the quality of life for yourself, your family, and your community. That’s why I visited Southwestern College and spoke with the students to encourage them to register to vote.

Meeting with constituents is the best part of the job, so I was excited to sit down with Linda Vista residents this past weekend to talk about everything from child care to Ukraine to protecting our health privacy.
|
Earlier this week, I joined Mayor Todd Gloria, Councilmember Raul Campillo, and lots of kids and community members to celebrate the $500,000 I secured for the Linda Vista Library Outdoor Learning Patio. This funding will expand the outdoor children’s area and homework center and more than double the space devoted to early learning and family support.
Early childhood education makes a big difference in so many kids’ lives and I’m so excited to see the ripple effects of this funding in our community.

Every year, I have the honor of nominating high school seniors from my district to attend the military service academies. And my office just extended the deadline for applications! You now have until September 23rd to apply and you can find more information here.
I went to visit the JROTC class at Morse High School to encourage them to apply, because I want to make sure our military – including our service academies – represents our country and includes all the amazing, diverse backgrounds and experiences our community has to offer.

It’s so important to stand up for our values not just at home – but around the world. In less than a month, Brazilians will head to the polls to elect their next president. But President Bolsonaro has already laid the groundwork for staying in office no matter the election results. That’s why I introduced a bicameral resolution declaring that we shouldn’t recognize or provide military aid to an illegitimate government in Brazil. Recently, I also launched the Protection of Civilians in Conflict Caucus to conduct oversight and advance policies that prevent, reduce, and respond to civilian harm as a result of U.S. and partners’ operations. In our first official action, I led the caucus in demanding answers from Secretary Austin about possible U.S. involvement in a military strike that killed a reported 160 civilians in Nigeria in 2017. Civilian harm never has been and never will be an acceptable cost of war, so we need transparency and accountability.
