Working Across Wyoming this Summer

August gets very quiet in Washington, D.C. when the House and Senate stand in recess. Thankfully, this gives me the opportunity to be home in Wyoming and meet face-to-face with constituents and community leaders.

I kicked off August in Lincoln County by meeting with my state staff to discuss how we can better serve you, the folks across Wyoming. For three days, we discussed the top issues we are hearing about in my state offices, how to make our casework process more efficient, and how to find better ways to inform the people of Wyoming about what I am working on in Washington. After our work was done, we had a team dinner, where Jen Fernandez from my Cody office taught us all how to make fry bread. It was a delicious treat!

I joined the Jackson Hole Rotary Club for their weekly luncheon to discuss a wide variety of issues including my work on the Space Subcommittee as well as economic development opportunities in the financial innovation and manufacturing sectors. I always enjoy visiting with Wyoming rotarians, and I look forward to joining rotary members at their meetings across the state soon.

One of my favorite summer activities is going to county fairs around the state, and the Wyoming State Fair is a particular draw. I grew up in 4H and I love the skills students develop by participating in fair. Senator John Barrasso and I enjoyed walking in the State Fair Parade together this year!

I had the opportunity to address the participants at the Petroleum Association of Wyoming annual meeting in Cheyenne. I introduced my dear friend Vice President Mike Pence before he expressed his support for Wyoming’s energy industry, and his concern for our future as we deal with the fallout of President Biden’s domestic energy policies.

I toured the new Elite Mining facilities in Cheyenne. This digital asset mining company is trailblazing cryptocurrency mining methods and bringing new jobs to Wyoming in the process.

Happy Trails,
WORKING IN WASHINGTON

Legislative Actions:

  • The bipartisan Preventing PFAS Runoff at Airports Act, that I cosponsored with Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), unanimously passed in the Senate this week. This bill allows the Federal Aviation Administration to cover 100% of the costs for airports to purchase and deploy equipment to test fire suppression systems that contain perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) without discharging such substances.
    • This funding allows seven Wyoming airports to purchase devices that avoid discharging PFAS chemicals when testing firefighting equipment.
  • I cosigned a bipartisan and bicameral letter to the Department of Interior’s Interagency Working Group to encourage support for a robust domestic mineral supply chain for U.S. economic and national security priorities.
    • Wyoming’s mining industry is an essential part of our economy, with coal being the second largest source of tax revenue for state and local governments. Mining jobs pay, on average, twice as much as the average salary in Wyoming.
  • I led a letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services with recommendations for modernizing organ donation transportation rules.
    • The recommendations in this letter would improve outcomes in quality of care, increase organ donations, lower the cost of care, and free up hospital beds for people in Wyoming.
WORKING IN WYOMING

My staff has been hearing and passing along your growing concerns about inflation. Inflation is a tax on all Americans, and I am working hard to make sure that you all can afford your day-to-day necessities. On August 7, 2022 I voted against the so-called Inflation Reduction Act that was jammed through the Senate by Democratic leadership. This legislation spends billions of taxpayer dollars on climate change programs that will not benefit the people of Wyoming. In response, I joined Senator Shelley Moore Capito (WV) and ten other Republicans to introduce the Real Emergencies Act to clarify that President Biden does not have the authority to declare a national emergency based on climate change. The people of Wyoming depend on coal production, and by taking away that income by declaring a national emergency, the economic devastation of inflation will continue harm our state.

Media:

I wrote an op-ed about the digital asset regulatory framework I introduced alongside Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY).

News Around Wyoming:

Mining Companies See Opportunity In Wyoming But Permitting Time Takes 10 Years
Cowboy State Daily
Mineral exploration companies are looking for valuable minerals to mine in Wyoming. The prospects look good for gold, copper, zinc, nickel, and platinum mining in the Cowboy State, but realizing that investment runs up against a heavily bureaucratic permitting process, which can easily take a decade.

Visionary Gold Corp, which is based in Vancouver, Canada, is performing exploratory drills to determine the economic potential of its 35 mining claims and 640 leased acres near Jeffrey City in southeast Fremont County.
