Re: Call to Action! CA rents increase up to 10%

John,

Last week, we reached out about the challenges facing California renters. This week, the heat wave has us feeling the climate and housing crises collide. Much of the state is dealing with temperatures close to or above the triple digits. Meanwhile, our unhoused population is rising and skyrocketing rents are locking people into poor living conditions often without working air conditioning.

The sweltering temperatures up and down our state are a reminder of how urgent it is to ensure that all Californians have access to secure, stable, and affordable shelter.

Will you tag your representative in Sacramento in this tweet and ask them what they’re doing to address California’s housing crisis?

No matter where you are in California,  it’s been seriously hot out there. We need everyone to make sure our representatives feel the heat and act now to provide housing for all.

John,

In August, California laws meant to prevent rent hikes are permitting rental increases as high as 10%. Why? Because those laws use inflation to calculate maximum allowable increases–and inflation is the highest it's been in decades.

California is in a housing crisis and we can’t afford to keep quiet.

Take action today. Click here to call your rep in Sacramento and ask them what they’re doing to address our housing crisis.

While corporate landlords and investors are making record profits, the average person cannot afford a two-bedroom apartment in any county in California! Even before COVID-19 and record-high inflation, over one-third of California renters, disproportionately people of color –  were already rent-burdened. This means they’ve been paying well over 30% of their total income in rent.

We literally can’t afford to keep quiet. In the coming months, our reps in Sacramento will be making big decisions about how to address our housing crisis. Can we count on you to make sure they know we’re paying attention?
