Dear John, Four years ago this week, three concerned moms launched a website to educate parents about a new, stealth-by-design flavored e-cigarette targeting kids: JUUL. It would be months before the Surgeon General and FDA declared youth vaping an “epidemic”. We never imagined that we were, in fact, launching a grassroots movement, the first national parent voice battling the tobacco industry. We were gratified by the latest news that JUUL will pay over $438 million to settle with 33 states and Puerto Rico for its marketing to teens. However, the human cost of this ongoing adolescent public-health crisis cannot be quantified and will likely unfold for decades: millions of young people have been harmed, with many suffering from severe nicotine addiction, lung injuries, seizures, and other serious health issues. Yesterday, we met with new FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf and Dr. Brian King, FDA's new Director of the Center for Tobacco Products to discuss information and concerns that parents across the country share with us every single day. Our fight is not over—there is so much more to do. With your support, we will continue educating about the dangers of youth tobacco use, advocating to end the sale of all flavored tobacco products, and empowering parents to use our authentic, powerful voices to protect our kids. Happy Anniversary—and thank you! | | | | | | | |
