Yesterday, the Supreme Court of Michigan declared that abortion rights will be on their ballot in November. If Michigan voters support the measure, reproductive freedoms will be protected in that state — at least, so long as we make sure the GOP doesn't win the majority in Congress and try to pass a nationwide ban.
Just weeks ago, we saw voters in Kansas surprise the pundits when they voted NO on a proposed abortion ban in their very Red state. A strong outreach and information campaign led by countless organizers and volunteers was critical to that outcome and ensured citizens were aware of the stakes and of the deliberate campaign to confuse them about what a YES or NO vote meant.
The Bottom line: 14 states have already passed statewide abortion bans, and conservative legislatures in other states across the country are seeking to follow their lead. But Kansas shows that if we are organized and determined we can effectively fight back at the ballot box.
If Republicans take control of Congress a nationwide abortion ban will be at the top of their agenda. We can't let that happen.
The overwhelming majority of Americans are with us on this. And if folks turn out to vote in large numbers we can gain seats in the Senate and hold our majority in the House. But it is bound to be a very close election and we must make sure all voters know just how important their participation is.
Onwards,
