Dear neighbor,
In last week's newsletter, I asked you which issue was a top concern of yours, and the majority of responders said gun violence. I share your concern – gun violence has impacted nearly every community, including ours. My heart goes out to every person who has been impacted by gun violence. As part of our work to put people over politics, Democrats are fighting for safer communities with commonsense reforms to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people.
On average, 40,620 people in America die by gun violence each year, according to Everytown for Gun Safety. We cannot stand by and watch more innocent Americans lose their lives.
While extreme MAGA Republicans oppose gun violence prevention measures and stand with the gun lobby, Democrats are standing with American families, passing critical legislation that will make our communities safer.
I’ve voted for legislation to require background checks for all gun sales, close loopholes that let dangerous people get guns, ban assault weapons, and keep our children safe, including:
- The Bipartisan Background Checks Act to establish new background check requirements for firearm transfers between private parties, closing loopholes that allow criminals to buy weapons unchecked.
- The Enhanced Background Checks Act to close the Charleston loophole, which currently allows dealers to transfer a firearm to a buyer after 3 business days if the FBI background check has not been completed.
- The Protecting Our Kids Act to raise the purchasing age for semi-automatic weapons from 18 to 21 years old, outlaw high-capacity magazines, require the safe storage of guns, and ban bump stocks and untraceable and deadly ghost guns.
- The Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act to keep guns out of the hands of people who pose a threat to themselves or others through a federal red-flag program.
- The Assault Weapons Ban of 2022 to ban military-style weapons, such as AR-15s, and high-capacity magazines that have been used in many mass shootings.
- The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a commonsense, comprehensive gun safety package to reduce the threat of gun violence and save lives. This was signed into law by President Biden.
More work needs to be done to eliminate the threat of gun violence in our nation. That’s why Democrats will not stop working to protect our children and families and keep deadly weapons off of our streets.

Last week, I joined CNN to discuss the investigation into the former President’s dangerous mishandling of Top Secret, confidential documents at Mar-A-Lago. As a Member of Congress, I have a Top Secret security clearance. If I had classified documents in my home, I would have been arrested and indicted. Anybody else in America would have been arrested and indicted. The law should apply equally, and I look forward to the Department of Justice continuing their criminal investigation. If you have any questions or concerns, please call our D.C. office at (202) 225-3976 or our Los Angeles district office at (323) 651-1040.
I look forward to updating you again soon.
Sincerely,
Ted W. Lieu
Member of Congress
