We have a chance to change Michigan’s state constitution to protect abortion rights permanently, which would overturn a pre-Roe state law making abortion a felony.

Michigan Reproductive Freedom For All gathered a record-breaking number of signatures—over 750,000—for a new ballot initiative to keep abortion legal in our state.

After Republican members on the Board of State Canvassers tried to disenfranchise voters by blocking the measure, the ballot initiative turned to the state Supreme Court, which just yesterday announced that Prop 3 will be on the ballot for November’s election.

Now we have to Get Out the Vote and spread the word, especially since anti-abortion groups have already reserved nearly $16 million in TV ads through Election Day. Our field team is also helping to talk with voters about reproductive freedom in Michigan.

If a majority of voters vote yes on the ballot measure (now called Prop 3), we will ensure that all Michiganders have the right to safe and respectful care during birthing, everyone has the right to use temporary or permanent birth control, everyone has the right to continue or end a pregnancy pre-viability, and no one can be punished for having a miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion.

The stakes are high, since our state’s pre-Roe ban on abortion would punish providers with up to 15 years in prison. Prop 3 would amend our state constitution and make sure that no one goes to prison for providing safe medical care.

With Roe v. Wade overturned, many states across the country—particularly in the Midwest—have outlawed abortion. People are travelling to Michigan to get abortion care, which makes it even more vital to keep Michigan a safe state for abortion access.
