Seven days a week, my dad does what millions of people do all across the country: He gets out of bed, puts on a tartan tie, and gets ready to tackle the day. But he does something unique, too — he draws a symbol on the back of his hand before hitting the campaign trail.

Have you noticed it, friend? The symbol looks like a tic-tac-toe board, but it’s actually called a Jerusalem Cross. It might look strange, but to me that cross on his hand is just as much a part of my dad as his tartan tie.
My dad draws the Jerusalem Cross on his hand to remind himself of two things: his faith, and his commitment to tell the truth, no matter the cost. Whether he’s at a coffee shop in New Hampshire with a handful of local voters or at the Democratic debate tomorrow in front of millions of Americans — I know he’ll always tell the truth.
Part of that truth-telling is that when my dad sees something wrong, he speaks out about it. Today, he sees that so many of America’s big problems, from our climate crisis to our broken health care system, share the same root cause — a political system that has allowed corporations to buy power and put their profits ahead of people’s rights. As he fights for a government of, by, and for the people, he’s got a moral compass on his hand. That’s who my dad is.
My parents inspired me to be the person that I am today. I’m drawing a cross on my hand tomorrow, not just to support the man in the tartan tie, but as a reminder for me to live up to an ideal he taught me — to tell the truth, always.
Thanks,
Sam Steyer
Sam and his sister Evi just wrapped up a week of volunteering in Iowa!
Every week, we’re calling, texting, and canvassing voters in early states to make sure that they hear about Tom and his plan for our country.
