Hi JOHN,
No matter where I am, the need for more affordable housing is top of mind. Time and again I hear that the cost of renting or buying a home in Rhode Island is simply too high.
There are countless stories. There’s the couple who had to pay six months rent in advance to secure their apartment, and the person looking to buy and realizing they can’t afford–or find–a home. I’ve also heard from business owners who are having a hard time recruiting employees because of a lack of affordable housing.
In a state our size, this is fixable. We also know what works. In Congress, I will make sure Rhode Islanders can live and work here in our state with the following priorities:
Expanding access to first-time home buyers by investing in programs that help with down payments and closing costs.
Increasing rental assistance , including the Housing Choice Voucher program and emergency help for families facing eviction.
Improving the housing supply by bolstering programs such as the Housing Trust Fund and renovating public housing.
I will also focus on having responsive constituent services and bring together community leaders and groups who know what works so we can solve these challenges together to build stronger communities.
