Now that the U.S. Senate is back from August recess, senators can focus on confirming President Biden’s judicial nominees—and there are many vacancies to fill.

Right after Labor Day, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer filed cloture on a number of nominees, including Arianna Freeman for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. A full Senate confirmation vote should be imminent.

Freeman is an exemplary nominee who personifies Biden’s commitment to install judges who will ensure everyone can see themselves represented on our courts. She is a public defender and has worked with hundreds of clients who could not afford counsel.

Freeman would be the second public defender, the first Black woman, and the first woman of color period to ever sit on the Third Circuit (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware & the Virgin Islands)—a part of the country that is home to more than three million Black people.

For far too long, presidents have favored prosecutors and corporate lawyers when selecting nominees for the federal bench. But for people who rely on the courts to protect their fundamental human rights, public defenders and civil rights lawyers are critical.

In Freeman’s current role as a federal public defender, she has specialized in post-conviction relief, including for clients impacted by mandatory minimum sentencing. Prior to her current role, she served as an assistant federal defender and has taught at Drexel Law School. She is incredibly well-prepared for a seat on the Third Circuit.

Freeman’s confirmation should matter to you, no matter where you live. Ensuring the Third Circuit (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and the Virgin Islands) and all of our courts are representative of the people they serve is a priority we must all share.
