OCC's Hsu Says Bank-Fintech Relationships May Be A Systemic Risk

Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael Hsu warned that widespread and increasingly complex relationships between banks and fintechs could set the stage for a financial crisis. 
At a conference of bankers in New York hosted by the Bank Policy Institute and the Clearing House Association, Hsu said that he's concerned with the increase in complexity in business models that facilitate things like mobile payments, online lending and deposit-taking activities.  [Read more]

Energy & Environment — Water Crisis Raises Environmental Racism Concerns

As tens of thousands of residents of Jackson, Miss., were without clean water, some advocates say the situation stems from years of environmental racism. More than 80 percent of Jackson residents are Black, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Last week, those residents saw their main water treatment facility fail in the wake of flooding, leaving them without clean water for drinking, bathing or cooking. [Read more]
 
Affordable-Housing Projects Derailed As Developers Struggle for Financing

Affordable-housing developers nationwide are stalling work on new projects, delaying thousands of units from coming to market when the U.S. already has a broad deficit of low-income housing. Rising interest rates and inflation have made financing for affordable housing more difficult and costly. Supply-chain issues for materials like lumber and appliances have eased a bit recently but haven’t gone away. [Read more]
