Hello,
When I think of California, it is nearly impossible not to think of the rich Latino history that helped to make this state so dynamic.
That’s why I’m inviting you to join us for a virtual celebration of Latino Heritage Month on Saturday, September 17th from 2-3pm that will stream live from Fresno, California.
People like Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta who fought for workers in the fields to have rights and fair wages or star Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela or Sylvia Mendez, whose fight to attend school led to a Supreme Court case outlawing segregation in California schools or trailblazing transgender Latina activist Bamby Salcedo come to mind.
People like my parents come to mind too. They brought me to the United States at the age of 14 to escape political violence in our native Guatemala. I did not know what my future would hold. I didn’t speak English and I didn’t have documentation. At that time, those were two things that made you a target.
But my parents knew a better life awaited us in California.
Determined not to let them down, I graduated first in my class from Thomas Jefferson High School in South Central Los Angeles. Scholarships and working through school made it possible for me to attend Stanford University and Harvard Law School.
Now I have the distinct honor of serving as Vice-Chair of the California Democratic Party where I’m the highest ranking Latino in the largest state party in the entire country.
In this role, I get to work with so many Latino leaders who make our party strong.
I think about people like our Executive Director Yvette Martinez who is the only Latina leading a state Democratic Party in the country. Or the many Latino CADEM staff, delegates, and party activists. When my fellow officers and I got together to appoint people to the party’s standing committees, we wanted to make sure they reflected California’s diversity. The result, 32% percent of our appointees were Latino. We also made changes to allow for undocumented people and Californians with DACA status to work for and be delegates to our party.
I think about Latino Democrats that we’re supporting such as U.S. Senator Alex Padilla. In the Central Valley, where we’ll be on the ground for our Latino Heritage Month activities, I think of Assemblymember Rudy Salas running for Congress, Esmeralda Soria running for State Assembly, and our CADEM Central Valley Organizer Cassandra Chavez.
Again, I hope that you will join us in celebrating this rich heritage.

Hola,
Cuando pienso en California, es casi imposible no pensar en la rica historia Latina que ayudó a que este estado sea tan dinámico.
Es por eso que los invito a unirse a nosotros para una celebración virtual del Mes de la Herencia Latina el sábado 17 de septiembre de 2 a 3 p. m. que se transmitirá en vivo desde Fresno, California.
Hay personas que me vienen a la mente como César Chávez y Dolores Huerta, que lucharon para que los trabajadores del campo tuvieran derechos y salarios justos, o el lanzador estrella de los Dodgers, Fernando Valenzuela, o Sylvia Méndez, cuya lucha por asistir a la escuela condujo a un caso en la Corte Suprema que prohibía la segregación en las escuelas de California o que promovió a las latinas transgénero como la activista Bamby Salcedo.
Pero también me vienen a la mente personas como mis padres. Ellos me trajeron a los Estados Unidos a la edad de 14 años para escapar de la violencia política en nuestra Guatemala natal. No sabía lo que me esperaba en el futuro. No hablaba inglés y no tenía documentación. En esa época, esas eran dos cosas que te señalaban.
Pero mis padres sabían que nos esperaba una vida mejor en California.
Decidido a no decepcionarlos, me gradué primero en mi clase de la escuela secundaria Thomas Jefferson en el centro sur de Los Ángeles. Las becas y el trabajo que tenía mientras estaba en la escuela me permitieron asistir a la Universidad de Stanford y a la Facultad de Derecho de Harvard.
Ahora tengo el gran honor de desempeñarme como vicepresidente del Partido Demócrata de California, donde soy el latino de más alto rango en el partido estatal más grande de todo el país.
En este cargo, puedo trabajar con una plenitud de líderes latinos que fortalecen a nuestro partido.
Pienso en personas como nuestra Directora Ejecutiva Yvette Martínez, quien es la única latina que lidera un Partido Demócrata estatal en todo el país. O los numerosos miembros del personal, delegados y activistas latinos del partido CADEM. Cuando mis compañeros oficiales y yo nos reunimos para nombrar personas para los comités permanentes del partido, queríamos asegurarnos de que reflejaran la diversidad de California. El resultado, el 32% por ciento de nuestros designados son latinos. También hicimos cambios para permitir que las personas indocumentadas y los californianos con estatus de DACA puedan trabajar y ser delegados de nuestro partido.
Pienso en los demócratas latinos que estamos apoyando, como el senador estadounidense Alex Padilla. En el Valle Central, donde estaremos en persona para nuestras actividades del Mes de la Herencia Latina, pienso en el asambleísta Rudy Salas que se postula para el Congreso, Esmeralda Soria que se postula para la Asamblea Estatal y nuestra organizadora del Valle Central de CADEM, Cassandra Chavez.
Una vez más, espero que se una a nosotros para celebrar este rico legado.
