House Passes Resolution Condemning Global Boycott Targeting Israel

The House of Representatives on Tuesday overwhelmingly passed a bipartisan measure condemning efforts to boycott and economically isolate Israel in a 398-17 vote. The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS) calls on the international community to withdraw investments and shun the Israeli government, businesses and other institutions. The resolution said the BDS campaign is one that “promotes principles of collective guilt, mash punishment and group isolation, which are destructive of prospects for progress towards peace.” Its critics argue that its goals would fundamentally undermine Israel’s status as a Jewish homeland. No one in either party spoke against the measure. “Boycotts have been previously used as tools for social justice in this very
country,” said Representative Ted Deutch (D-FL). “But BDS doesn’t seek social justice. It seeks a world in which the State of Israel doesn’t exist.”

House Passes Bill that Calls to Sanction Palestinian Terror Groups

The House of Representatives approved a bill on Tuesday that calls to sanction Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups. House Bill 1850, the Palestinian International Terrorism Support Prevention Act, directs the president “to impose sanctions with respect to foreign support for Palestinian terrorism, and for other purposes.” The bill also directs the president to submit an annual report to Congress, identifying “each foreign person or agency or instrumentality of a foreign state that... knowingly assists in, sponsors, or provides significant financial or material support” for “Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad or any affiliate.” The bill’s Republican sponsor, Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL), said, “These sanctions send a strong message to anybody who supports these radicals preaching the
destruction of Israel and death to everything we hold dear in the United States.”

Israel: Iran Smuggling Dual-Use Items for Hezbollah Arms by Sea into Beirut Port

On Tuesday, Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, accused Iran of exploiting civilian companies and maritime channels to smuggle weapons manufacturing equipment to Hezbollah. Danon told the U.N. Security Council that Israeli intelligence has uncovered evidence showing Iran’s Quds Force has been using the port of Beirut to ship items to the terror group since last year. The Israeli mission said “Syrian agents” purchased the dual use items from foreign companies under false pretenses and handed them over to the terrorist group after picking up the shipments from the port.

Israel to Begin Gas Exports to Egypt Within Months

Israel will begin natural gas exports to Egypt within four months, Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz said on Wednesday. The flow will secure the beginning of a landmark $15 billion export agreement that Israeli officials called the most significant deal to emerge since the neighboring countries made peace in 1979. The deal is set to strengthen economic ties between the two countries and give Israel a new export market.

Israelis discover way to prevent melanoma turning lethal

Melanoma is the stuff of cancer nightmares. While treatable when locked in the skin’s outer layer, once it penetrates deeper and metastasizes in vital organs it turns deadly. Israeli researchers have now discovered that fat cells play a key role in this transformation and have come up with a way to block it. “We have answered a major question that has preoccupied scientists for years: What makes melanoma change form, turning aggressive and violent?” said Prof. Carmit Levy from Tel Aviv University, who led the study together with her colleague Tamar Golan.
