A hostile progressive takeover

A business’s main goal is to act in the best interests of its investors, right? It’s the driving force behind our American free market.

But that might not be true for many businesses today, writes Kenin M. Spivak in The American Mind. Instead, huge progressive funds are compelling corporations to bow to the wishes of a far-left agenda.

These funds are forcing businesses to implement policies that aim at achieving “diversity” through racial preferences in hiring…

…eliminating carbon use at all costs…

…and many other progressive talking points.

These policies aren’t the shareholders’ ideas; they’re the ideas of a progressive elite.

Spivak gives us a ray of hope, though. He says some states are beginning to act against these ESG funds. Find out how they’re fighting back here.

From fascism to turtles

A quick glance at the average Twitter feed or the front pages of most mainstream media sites will find plentiful accusations of “fascism.” It’s a term that’s sure to get many heads to nod along in agreement and make your political enemies look bad.

But wait a minute. What does “fascism” even mean?

John Wilson, writing in First Things, recommends an upcoming book addressing this very question. Fascism Comes to America: A Century of Obsession in Politics and Culture, by Bruce Kuklick, certainly has a unique take on the issue:

“Unable to associate fascism with any stable observables over one hundred years, I am unconvinced that they exist,” Kuklick says.

If you want to hear more of Kuklick’s fascinating thoughts on the subject, his work comes out in December.

Read Wilson’s full review… and his opinion on a new book explaining how technology is revealing more about the extraordinary sounds of plants and animals (including turtles!) right here.

Gala for Western Civilization

October 13 will be a night to remember.

At ISI’s sixteenth annual Gala for Western Civilization in Washington, D.C., you and hundreds of other ISI friends and supporters will partake in an evening that will be unforgettable.

This year ISI will be showcasing top academic talent across three disciplines: political theory, economics, and history. We want to provide our alumni and supporters with an opportunity to experience some of the greatest conservative minds of our generation. The evening’s speakers include:

  • Chair of the Department of History at the University of Dallas, Susan Hanssen, who will give the keynote address
  • The William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Government, Harvey C. Mansfield, who will receive ISI’s Charles H. Hoeflich Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Merton P. Stoltz Professor of Economics at Brown University, Glenn Loury, who will receive ISI’s Faculty Award

It should be a wonderful evening full of great conversation.

Our virtual decline

Ever feel like your attention span is slipping away? Are you feeling more emotional or falling prey to distraction?

Alexis de Tocqueville isn’t surprised. He warned us about this years ago.

Casey Chalk says Tocqueville also has the solution.

From our IR archives in the summer of 2020, Chalk argues that Big Tech has used social media to exploit our own tendencies and make us inattentive. The effects are devastating to our political and social order.

We neglect our local communities… lose our ability to listen and communicate… and chase after every daily trend.

Chalk says it’s time to wean ourselves off our phones and start taking up the mantle of our civic duty. See his plan to free ourselves from our digital overlords here.
