Back to School & Covid, Post-Dobbs Double Effect
From Hastings Bioethics Forum
“Back to School: The Covid Vaccination Choice.” It’s the third back-to-school season during the Covid pandemic, but the first in which all schoolchildren are eligible for Covid vaccines. Yet vaccination rates for young children are very low. Parents are exercising their long-awaited right to choose, writes Elizabeth Lanphier. Read “Back to School: The Covid Vaccination Choice.”
“Dusting Off Double Effect for the Post-Dobbs Era.” In states with abortion bans, pregnant patients are suffering life-threatening medical emergencies, and clinicians are confused about what care they can legally give. There may be a way to help enable them to legally provide appropriate medical care to some of these patients, writes Adam Omelianchuck. It involves dusting off Double Effect reasoning, “according to which it is sometimes permissible to cause harm as a side effect of bringing about a good result.” Read “Dusting Off Double Effect for the Post-Dobbs Era.”
Overuse of Health Care as a Health Threat Major Source of Carbon Emissions
Hospital care and clinical services are the biggest contributors of carbon dioxide within the U.S. health care industry—itself a top source of emissions. A new essay in the Hastings Center Report identifies overuse of health care as a health threat, offers a data-driven action plan for carbon reduction in health care, and provides practical suggestions for more sustainable health care delivery in the U.S. Read the essay.
