We’re just starting to see the power of the disability vote. Thanks to civic engagement efforts for people with disabilities, the 2018 election had the largest disability turnout to date. This is great news for our community, because voting is a way for us to shape our society. Everything from curb cuts and sidewalks to anti-discrimination laws can change based on who holds elected office. By voting, we can impact our own lives and the lives of our community members.

All people with disabilities deserve accessible information about voting. That’s why ASAN is proud to announce our new Easy Read toolkit, all about voting and elections!

The toolkit focuses on the process of voting, and understanding how to prepare to vote on election day. This toolkit answers questions many first-time voters have, such as:

  • What is voting?
  • Why should I vote?
  • What’s the difference between a primary election and a general election?
  • How does the Electoral College work?
  • How do I get ready to vote?
  • How can I get disability accommodations when I vote?
  • … and many more!

We all deserve to understand our rights, and that includes the right to vote. Check out our toolkit to learn about voting, and share it with anyone who you think might benefit from reading it. Civic engagement among people with disabilities is increasing — let’s keep it going by making sure every member of our community understands how to vote!
