Dear John,
Politicians want to spend millions on soccer games and you’ll get stuck with the bills even if you live thousands of miles away from the arenas.
Toronto and Vancouver want to host five World Cup games each in 2026. But big city politicians want to stick taxpayers like you with the bill.
The cost of hosting these 10 World Cup games is pegged at $600 million. That means for every minute soccer players are on the field in Toronto and Vancouver, taxpayers are on the hook for $644,000.
And that’s the cost estimate before the overruns we all know are coming.
Even though all of the economic benefit will be concentrated in Toronto and Vancouver, Canada’s politicians have agreed to split the cost of the games roughly three ways, one-third paid for by the host city, one-third paid for by the host province, and one-third paid for by the feds.
Does that sound fair to taxpayers who live outside Toronto and Vancouver?
You may not live in Toronto or Vancouver, but you have a stake in this fight.
You’ll be left paying the bill. That’s why you have to do something before money starts to head out the door.
Toronto and Vancouver are planning to host five World Cup games each and the money hasn’t been spent yet. Soccer is a beautiful game, but the organizers need to make a business plan that pays its own way. Sticking taxpayers with the bill is unacceptable.
That’s why now is the time for taxpayers like you to make your voice heard.
Say no to spending taxpayers’ money on the World Cup boondoggle.
