Hello Jack, At the League, we often marvel at a simple truth: The more we do to protect and restore the beauty of the redwoods, the more we realize it’s really the redwoods who are saving us. I write to you today with the memory of recent wildfires weighing on my mind. Over the last two years, severe fires have killed 19% of our oldest, largest giant sequoias, and forever changed parks such as Big Basin Redwoods State Park. If we want these forests to have a future, we need to do the work to protect them. Because this isn’t just about the future of the forests, it’s about our future, as well. Redwood forests pull more carbon from the atmosphere per acre than any other forest. They provide recreation and wonder for millions of visitors each year. They shelter endangered species like the spotted owl. And beyond that, their quieting presence speaks to something good in the world that simply must be preserved. Thanks to supporters like you, the League is making important strides in fostering resilience among the coast redwood and giant sequoia. You’re helping us protect coast redwoods and giant sequoia throughout their full range, piece by piece, as we strive to return it to their original grandeur — but this work is far from complete. Our vision for the next century calls for increased efforts to heal the previously logged redwood forests that surround their majestic old-growth ancestors. Because of your generosity, we’ve been able to purchase Lost Coast Redwoods, a breathtaking 3,181-acre property once managed for commercial timber production. We’ve partnered with the InterTribal Sinkyone Wilderness Council to permanently protect a 523-acre property called Tc’ih-Léh-Dûñ, which translates to “Fish Run Place” in the Sinkyone language. Through tribal stewardship, we now have an opportunity to restore balance in this ecosystem. In the face of the ongoing threats of development, climate change, drought and increasingly severe wildfires, the importance of this work cannot be overstated. To continue our efforts to fulfill this vision, we count on you. Will you renew your commitment to the redwood forests? From everyone at the League, thank you for standing with us for the urgent work ahead. Sincerely,
P.S. Anything you give will help us continue our record of success protecting and restoring the redwoods. Please renew your support for the League today. |
