As wildfires blaze across the West, the air quality reached unhealthy levels in my home state of Montana this week. With that much smoke, I worry about the health of my family and the most vulnerable among us — the elderly, children, people with pre-existing conditions and those closest to the fires.

I know that I'm not alone in my fears for loss of life and homes. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, this year nearly 50,000 wildfires have burned more than 6.3 million acres across 13 states. And on the East Coast, NOAA is predicting another above-normal Atlantic hurricane season, with three to five Category 3 or worse storms, which are powerful enough to tear roofs off homes, uproot large trees and cause significant damage.

Climate change is making extreme weather events like these more frequent and more destructive. It's become a sad reality that almost everyone in the world today experiences extreme weather — just one of many ways that climate change threatens our future.
