UFE is supporting organizing to raise the minimum wage and uplifting the stories of low wage workers with our new video series, “Below the Line: Stories from Low-Wage Workers in the South.” <[link removed]> We are excited to share the first video in this new series with you!



The first worker you’ll meet is Roberto, a Christmas tree farmer from Durango, Mexico. As he explains, “Unfortunately, the current salary is no longer comparable to the bills.” These videos provide important insight into workers’ experiences with our economy and the need to raise wages across the South. North Carolina is ranked the worst state in the country for workers, according to a recent Oxfam report.

We’re building power with farmworker organizers by increasing awareness of the conditions of farm labor, and promoting the equality, dignity, and rights of farmworkers. Farmworkers are often immigrants with little or no legal protection on the job. In 2020, there were 22,000 H-2A migrant farmworkers in North Carolina alone, making just $14.16/hour.



Stories have the power to challenge and change the narrative. The dominant narratives we’ve been told about the economy are not true for everyone (or even the majority of people). But by hearing and uplifting the stories of those most impacted, we can all work to change them. This new storytelling project builds off of years of building relationships with and advocating for higher wages through our Raising Wages NC coalition, and it is part of our ongoing commitment and strategy to improve economic conditions and opportunities for workers across the South.

El primer trabajador que conocerás es Roberto, un agricultor de árboles de Navidad de Durango, México. Según explica, “desafortunadamente, el salario actual ya no es competencia con los biles." Estos videos brindan información importante sobre las experiencias de los trabajadores con nuestra economía y la necesidad de aumentar los salarios en todo el Sur. Carolina del Norte, en particular, está clasificado como el peor estado para los trabajadores, según un informe reciente de Oxfam.



Estamos construyendo poder con los organizadores de trabajadores agrícolas vía aumentando la conciencia sobre las condiciones del trabajo agrícola y promoviendo la igualdad, la dignidad y los derechos de los trabajadores agrícolas.
