Dear Friend,

On Monday, we celebrated Labor Day and the continued fight for equity and fairness in the workplace – and I can’t think of a better time to renew my call to ban Members of Congress from trading stocks while in office.

As Members of Congress, we are often provided with sensitive information in order to do our jobs. I firmly believe that no Member of Congress should be allowed to then use that information to bolster their own personal stock portfolio, ever. In order for Congress to earn the full trust of the American people, Members of Congress must be banned from trading stocks during our time in office.

Unfortunately, existing ethics laws don’t go far enough to safeguard against Members benefiting from their access to privileged information. This is a matter of public trust, democracy, and fairness. It is time for Congress to act. I am proud to reaffirm my commitment to this growing effort to make it illegal for Members of Congress to buy and trade stocks while in office.

Let me be clear, I don’t own stocks. I don’t believe that it is consistent with my values of public service and good government to trade stocks while making decisions that affect the stock market, our economy, and our communities.

For these reasons, I joined a letter calling on Congressional leadership to bring the Ban Conflicted Trading Act and the TRUST in Congress Act to a vote. This letter represents the largest-ever bipartisan effort to close loopholes and ban members of Congress from trading stocks. It is vital to the health of our democracy that no elected official can use their position of public trust to gain an unfair financial advantage in the stock market.

Do you support closing loopholes so that Members of Congress cannot trade stocks while in office?
