The Fight for a Hunger Free America This September

The Life Changing Power of
Food and Cash Aid

On Tuesday, as a lead up to the September 28th White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, Hunger Free America released the results of a groundbreaking survey and report demonstrating how increased federal food and cash aid during the pandemic helped low-income families.

We released the results at a virtual press conference where we were joined by US Rep. Jim McGovern, US Rep. Rosa DeLauro, and Benjamin Kupersmit, whose firm conducted the survey. You can watch the full press conference below.

White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health

On September 28th the White House will hold its first conference on hunger in over 50 years! Properly implemented, the conference will provide an historic opportunity to create and implement a comprehensive plan to, by 2030, end domestic hunger, food insecurity, and nutritional insecurity, and ensure that nutritious food is affordable, convenient, and available for all Americans. Every sector in America has a role to play in ending hunger once and for all, as we lay out in our full list of recommendations, but the federal government must provide the most leadership and resources.

The conference will be livestreamed. If you'd like to receive email updates directly from the White House, you can sign up HERE.

Healthy Meals, Healthy Kids

It's Hunger Action Month and we at HFA are advocating for an important piece of legislation that will deliver a comprehensive, science-driven reauthorization of federal child nutrition programs that meets the needs of children and families.

The bill would:
  • Expand access to school meals
  • Preserve the future of school meal programs
  • Modernize the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
  • Provide additional funding to the USDA's Hunger Hotline, managed by Hunger Free America
  • Address food insecurity during the summer
  • Improve school meal capacity and sustainability
  • Strengthen the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP
Contact Nancy Pelosi and ask her to bring the Healthy Meals, Healthy Kids Act to the floor for a vote!

The Hunger Hotline

The Hunger Hotline, which HFA operates on behalf of the USDA, receives thousands of calls every month. In August, over half of the callers were referred to SNAP application resources. Other callers were connected to a local food pantry or food bank, grocery delivery services, or summer meals sites.

If you or someone you know is in need of food assistance, please call our Hunger Hotline! Our representatives are available Monday-Friday 7AM - 10PM: 866-348-6479 (English) or 877-842-6273 (Spanish).
