Classified Documents at Mar-a-Largo

Once again, the former president finds himself in legal jeopardy. This time for keeping presidential documents at Mar-A-Lago. While Mr. Trump declared it was all a witch hunt, we now know that The FBI found several boxes of documents including classified documents and some even labeled as top secret. This was despite the fact that he had notified The National Archives that he had turned in all such documents. In addition, there is increasing evidence that there was clear intent to keep the documents in his possession in flagrant violation of the law. Some of these documents, if they were to get into our enemies’ hands, could have serious consequences for our national security.

What was Mr. Trump's purpose in keeping such documents? Was he hiding something? Was he going to sell them? Did he suspect The FBI would search Mar-a-Lago thus allowing him to rouse his followers and scam them into sending him more money? Whatever the reason, we see that yet again, Mr. Trump has put his self-interests above those of the nation putting our national security and our democracy at risk. To make matters worse, his rhetoric is again ramping up the risk of unrest and violence. How many times does Mr. Trump have to put our country at risk; how many laws does he have to break; how many lies does he have to tell; how many of his associates must go to jail; and how many people does he have to scam before his followers realize what a dangerous man Mr. Trump truly is?

Democracy

Democracy is under attack everywhere in the world, but particularly here in the US where for generations we led the world in promoting our democracy. For example, an NPR survey conducted earlier this year found that 64% of the American population believes that U.S. democracy is in crisis and is at risk of failing. A strong indication that the situation is getting worse and not better is that over 70% of respondents in that poll said that democracy is more at risk of failure now than it was a year ago. Similarly, a Quinnipiac University survey reveals that 76% of respondents think political instability within the country is a bigger danger to the United States than external adversaries. Amazingly, this suggests that Americans recognize that we are a bigger threat to our own democracy than any other potential external threat. Sadly, according to this poll, over half of Americans (53%) expect political divisions in the country to worsen over their lifetime rather than get better.

As we approach the November 2022 elections, according to an NBC News poll Sunday, August 21, 2022 Americans now rank “threats to democracy” as the most important issue facing the country — higher, even, than the cost of living and the economy, which was just months ago top of mind. The shift may in part be explained by a slight inflationary cool-down, which has seen gas prices dip below four dollars per gallon, where prices were in March. But more than that, the poll seems to speak to a growing recognition, by the American public, that the GOP's sweeping assault on the country's election system has put democracy itself on the ballot.
