Dear Friend, Today the House of Representatives will vote to impeach Donald Trump for clear abuses of power and obstruction of Congress. But Mitch McConnell is already taking steps to ensure that Trump's trial in the Senate is a complete and utter farce. McConnell is supposed to be an impartial juror, but he's working in hand in glove with Trump's own White House counsel to plan the Senate proceedings, and he just announced that he won't allow a single witness to be called.1,2 Our democracy is at stake. We can't let Mitch McConnell rig Trump's impeachment trial. The reason McConnell won't call witnesses or hold a real trial is that he knows the facts are not on Trump's side. The president clearly tried to bribe Ukraine into making up dirt on his political opponent—one of the clearest abuses of power this country has ever seen. That's why the GOP leader just announced he wouldn't call White House witnesses who have first-hand information about the Ukraine scandal—including the chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, and former security chief, John Bolton.3 But it's not all up to McConnell. Democrats have promised to force a vote on witnesses and other aspects of the trial.4 If we can pressure just three Republicans to flip, the American people can get the impartial trial they deserve. Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Cory Gardner of Colorado, and Martha McSally of Arizona all face tough reelections next year—as will McConnell himself. Other House and Senate Republicans have demonstrated a willingness to break from the president, and we're flooding all of their offices with calls to demand that they examine all the evidence in the case against Trump.
