Heads up! New assignment!
And this one was requested by one of our favorite State Reps because support is needed from We The People.
We need to make some noise! Last spring more than 80% of Republicans who voted in the Primary said that when the Republican Party has the majority, we do NOT want our leadership to appoint Democrats as committee chairs. Read about it here.
It ain’t rocket science, but sadly, yes, it’s a thing, believe it or not. Our Republican legislature routinely allows the Speaker to hand over powerful and influential positions to the Democrats. He doesn’t have to. There’s no rule to make him. It’s merely “tradition.” Of course, if the Dems had the majority, that tradition wouldn’t amount to a hill of beans, and there would be no reciprocation of this more-than-generous gesture. Why? Because each party has goals and an agenda, and when you win you are expected to act on them. The Dems are very good at it. The Republicans? Not so much. So in spite of the fact that the Democrat Chairs kill conservative bills with all sorts of games and trickery, and in spite of the fact that Democrats literally left the state last year to wreak havoc and did so on the taxpayer dime and without punishment, and in spite of the fact that Republican voters don't want Democrats to be chairman, our presumed Speaker, Dade Phelan (pronounced “felon”), has every intention to do that foolish thing anyway.
So what do you do? You raise a stink. Your State Rep needs to feel a ton of pressure – enough so that he or she turns around and applies that same pressure to Speaker Phelan. Life must be made very uncomfortable for all involved. Post on social media, make calls, send emails, threaten censures in your Republican clubs and committees. Do whatever it takes.
Right now only one side realizes we’re at war. The other side has leadership still trying to kiss and make up. It’s time for We The People to let those “leaders” feel some heat to get the job done that we hired them to do.
Your marching orders:
Contact your State Rep. Don’t know who your State Rep is? Find it here. Then reach out via phone, online contact form, and on their social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc) and ask them to make sure the Speaker of the House does not assign Democrats as committee chairs.
Send the same messaging in the same ways to Speaker Dade Phelan.
Utilize your own social media pages and accounts to educate others and apply more pressure. You can tag your State Rep in your Facebook post by prefacing the name with the @ symbol. Facebook will remove the @ sign and highlight the name in blue, showing that he's tagged. For example, “Texas House Speaker @Dade Phelan plans to assign powerful committee chairmanships to the Democrats again! This has got to stop! Please reach out to your State Rep and the Speaker and tell them we are tired of losing based on their poor management of our majority power. @Giovanni Capriglione, this includes you!” You can tag them on Twitter as well.
Repeat several times between now and Christmas. Why? Because deals are being made and conversations are being had as we speak that you aren’t even aware of. If you wait until January when the session starts, these assignments will already be a done deal and we lose (or rather, Texas loses). Go ahead and mark your calendar now to remind yourself every few weeks that it’s time for your State Rep and the Speaker to get another nudge.
Talk up censuring. Your Republican Precinct Chairs and SREC representatives have the power to officially censure the Speaker for naming Democrats as committee chairs. Let them know that you want this step to be taken if Speaker Phelan pulls more of his same shenanigans. Don't know who your precinct chair and SREC reps are? Google your county GOP office and ask!
Most people aren’t paying attention, folks. That makes it all the more important for you to. It's not hard! Remember, at True Texas Project, we don’t just get mad, we do something about it.
Thank you, fellow warriors! Julie McCarty, CEO
PS. Most of our activist assignments are only sent to those who requested to be on our Citizen Advocate email list (you can add your name by emailing [email protected]). But this is one we wanted to make everyone aware of. Please do your part, and please email Fran to get on the regular list!
True Texas Project works hard to train and engage activists. Can you help??? We are 100% donation-based. Click here to donate to our cause.
Tired of getting so many emails? Please be patient!
