John,
On Tuesday, we got one of the biggest court victories in CREW’s history when a New Mexico judge ordered Otero County Commissioner Couy Griffin removed from office for his participation in the January 6th insurrection.
This case is a big deal on its own. It’s the first time a court has disqualified a public official under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment since 1869, and the first time a court has declared the January 6th attack on the Capitol an insurrection as a matter of law.
We’re incredibly proud of this hard-won and historic example of accountability for the insurrection. But we’re not done.
This decision is also important because it sets a precedent for possible actions against others who participated in the insurrection.
In his ruling, Judge Mathew said: “The mob ultimately achieved what even the Confederates never did during the Civil War: they breached the Capitol building and seized the Capitol grounds, forcing the Vice President and Congress to halt their constitutional duties and flee to more secure locations."
And that’s why we’re also taking a hard look at Donald Trump and other current and former government officials who played a role in inciting the attack on January 6th to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
We’re exploring every avenue for further accountability, now that we have won this important precedent. We’re celebrating this victory—which we owe to hundreds of supporters like you who have helped sustain us through the years—and we're continuing to fight for our democracy.
Thank you for standing with us,
Noah Bookbinder
