We'll be sharing our final 2020 political strategy, including our specific state and chamber targets, in the new year. For now, we want to give you a sneak peak into our plans―and share a few new details about where Sister District may be working next year.
Our 2020 Political Strategy
When it comes to turning states blue, the stakes could not be higher next year. That’s because 2020 is the last chance for Democrats to win control of state legislatures ahead of redistricting. Since the party in power draws district lines in most states, who we elect to our state legislatures next year will have consequences, up and down the ballot, for the next DECADE!
In 2020, Sister District plans to prioritize winning chambers in places where the state legislature controls redistricting by targeting races in chambers where Democrats hold either a slim or near majority. We will also focus on making inroads into chambers that we are unlikely to flip in a single election, but where we have excellent opportunities to build Democratic power for the long term. Some of the states and chambers that we are excitedly watching include:
- Texas House
- Minnesota Senate
- Michigan House
- Florida Senate & House
- Georgia Senate & House
- North Carolina Senate & House
- Pennsylvania Senate & House
- Wisconsin Assembly
We plan to hold nothing back next year, and that means supporting up to THREE times as many candidates in 2020! But to do that, we must first raise enough funds. Can you help us start 2020 strong by making a donation of any amount to Sister District this month?
And Some New Details About States We Have Our Eye On!
- The Texas candidate filing deadline has now passed, and there are Democrats running in every top targeted state House district!
- The North Carolina candidate filing deadline is this Friday, and we will be watching for opportunities to build power in some recently redrawn districts.
- Other potential 2020 targets―including Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin―have candidate filing deadlines ranging from February to June. We're following the candidate recruitment efforts of our in-state and national partners and allies in these states closely and are excited to see the incredible 2020 candidate class take shape.
As the field is set for these critical races, Sister District will begin rolling out our 2020 candidate endorsements―but you can still take action today to set Democrats up for success in the new year! Will you help lay the foundation for victory in 2020 by making one last contribution to Sister District before 2019 comes to a close?
