TOMORROW

Event on IUU Fishing in Latin America and the Caribbean

Join us tomorrow at 1 p.m. EST, as InSight Crime and the Center for Latin American & Latino Studies at American University (CLALS) hold a discussion with six experts on the latest threats posed by illegal fishing in the region. The discussion will also stream live on the CLALS Facebook page

The first panel focuses on the waters of Central America and the Caribbean. It begins at 1:30 p.m. EST and features Peter A. Murray, advisor of fisheries management and development at the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism Secretariat; Philippe Le Billon, professor at the University of British Columbia's School of Public Policy and Global Affairs; and Jorge Arturo Jiménez, regional executive director of the MarViva Foundation, an ocean conservation organization.

The second panel explores South America’s seas. It starts shortly after 3 p.m. EST and features Milko Schvartzman, ocean policy coordinator for environmental watchdog organization Círculo de Políticas Ambientales; Cristina Cely, an ocean conservationist in Ecuador; and Joshua Goodman, Latin America correspondent for The Associated Press.

In addition to the conference, we have recently published a comprehensive paper on the causes, consequences, and responses to IUU fishing crimes across nine countries: Jamaica, Costa Rica, Panama, Suriname, Guyana, Ecuador, Chile, Uruguay, and Argentina.

The paper builds on some of the reporting seen in our recent “Plundered Oceans” investigation. The on-the-ground, country-specific reports shine light into the murky waters of IUU fishing.
