John, Gov. Youngkin is finally addressing Virginia’s teacher shortage, but not how you’d think. He signed an executive directive that would bring retired teachers back into the workforce, and recruit teachers certified in other states to teach in Virginia. It makes no mention of teachers’ stagnant salaries or the right wing’s weaponization of school boards, the two main reasons Virginia teachers are leaving their profession. We know the best way to recruit new teachers is to treat and pay current teachers like the caring, educated professionals that they are. But, that’s somehow lost on Youngkin. He wants to continue his crusade against teaching American history, and bring new (and newly retired) teachers into the same toxic, unsustainable working environment. We just celebrated Labor Day, commemorating the many contributions of our labor movement, including teachers’ unions. Without any irony, though, Youngkin chose the first week of September to sign this damaging executive directive. Fighting for teachers, Team Ayala Paid for by Hala for State Senate
