Dear Friends,California is facing an unprecedented heat wave and record-breaking temperatures. Yesterday, the California Independent System Operator issued an Energy Emergency Alert informing residents to conserve energy to avoid emergency power outages. This heat wave is expected to last through at least Friday, and a "Flex Alert" urging consumers to reduce their power use was extended until Wednesday.Our state is at the forefront of the climate crisis, and that's why I'm leading the charge in Congress to pass meaningful climate legislation. Three of my bills passed into law in the Inflation Reduction Act, which would help working families transition to the green economy, lower energy costs, and fight climate change.I secured nearly $2 million in federal funding to cool down streets in Boyle Heights and build a Green New Deal-certified natural park in Ramona Gardens, ensuring our residents are safer and better equipped to deal with rising temperatures.I am proud to be an original cosponsor of the Green New Deal, which sets forth a comprehensive, bold, and equitable approach for the federal government to tackle the climate crisis.I called on President Biden to use the full power of the Executive Branch and declare a national climate emergency, along with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and 57 of my colleagues.I voted to pass the Wildfire Response and Drought Resiliency Act, which invests in historic wildfire and drought suppression and mitigation efforts.Our communities are seeing the effects of climate change right now, and Congress can't wait to take action.
