Dear MoveOn member,
I'm Chris Torres, MoveOn's political director. I don't usually email MoveOn members, but I'm writing to you today because I have an important—but unfortunate—message to share.
I just heard from our COO, who oversees MoveOn's budgets, and after closing the books for the month of August, I'm worried.
Last month alone, we fell nearly $300,000 short of our fundraising projections, and if we don't catch up fast, we'll have to consider scaling back our midterm election campaign plans for the year.
In a moment, I will provide an update on the state of our budget, along with more details of our midterm election campaign. But first, I have a personal request.
With only 61 days remaining before Election Day, will you start a $3 weekly donation until the election to help close our budget shortfall? Your weekly donation will help defeat the MAGA GOP and ensure Democrats win the midterm elections. (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after the election to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)
No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.
John, I want to assure you that despite recent fundraising challenges, MoveOn remains in a financially stable position and we have the resources to carry out our core functions.
But in this election—where our nation is teetering between democracy and authoritarianism—we need to go above and beyond to stop radical MAGA Republicans from taking control of our government and instituting policies that will harm all of us, but especially women, LGBTQ+ people, communities of color, and low-income people.
That's why, when my team proposed a $30 million midterm election effort to defeat Trump-backed candidates—something we'd never done in our history—our Board, Executive Director, and COO enthusiastically gave it the green light … assuming that we'd meet our fundraising benchmarks as the year went on.
We are in the most crucial phase of our plan to use an updated version of the innovative voter engagement and turnout strategy that helped us win in 2020 to reach 6.6 million voters and ensure that young voters, voters of color, and those who voted for the first time in 2018 and 2020 turn out again. And the results so far are very promising.
But if we don't have the funds, we won't be able to keep these new strategies running through Election Day.
Can you chip in $3 weekly starting today through Election Day to ensure we have the resources to fully fund our campaign to stop Trump and his allies from winning the midterms? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after the election to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)
No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.
I want to close by acknowledging that we are living through an economically precarious moment.
The cost of food and housing across the country is still quite high. Healthcare premiums and co-pays are straining family budgets.
Meanwhile, the minimum wage—and middle-class wages—have remained stagnant. That means that families, and especially people on fixed incomes, have less income to spend on donations and charitable contributions.
Because MoveOn is a member-funded organization that depends largely on grassroots donations from working-class and middle-class Americans, we have seen our revenue decline, and we've had trouble meeting our fundraising goals for several months.
If you are not currently in a position to give, I understand, and I thank you deeply for all you have done to propel the progressive movement forward.
However, if you are in a position to give—any amount—there couldn't be a more important moment to chip in.
With 61 days left until Election Day—and our democracy on the line—will you start a $3 weekly donation to power and sustain MoveOn's midterm election campaign from now until Election Day? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after the election to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)
No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.
Thanks for all you do.
–Chris Torres
Want to support MoveOn's work? Donald Trump and his allies are methodically enacting a plan to place some of Trump's most ardent supporters in key election offices that oversee vote counting, have the power to certify—or decertify—election results, and declare election winners and losers. We've launched a powerful, multimillion-dollar campaign to stop Trump. But we need your help to power our effort.
Will you chip in $3 a week to power our work to stop Trump's coup?
No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.
