Dear Neighbor, I hope you are well! I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on several happenings in the district as well as Harrisburg.

Labor Day 

On Monday, I proudly walked in the Philadelphia Labor Day Parade with our local IBEW 98 union to celebrate organized labor. 

Over the years the meaning of Labor Day, and the reasons we celebrate this national holiday, have become distorted from store sales and a decades long campaign to sully the image of unions. But the truth is, organized labor empowers the work force and advocates for economic justice by demanding higher pay, better benefits, and a safer workplace in a democratic approach. All laborers are essential workers and deserve to hold their employers accountable for missteps and any grievances. 

A healthy, unionized workforce grows stronger communities and increases civic engagement, both of which are vital to our Commonwealth. I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe Labor Day weekend!

Clean Up & Stream Study

Don't forget! This Friday is my September Clean Up & Stream Study in Evansburg State Park. At 4pm I will be joined by local watershed experts as we remove litter and learn about stream health. Volunteers and families are welcomed.

PA Marijuana Pardon Project

Last week, Pennsylvania launched the PA Marijuana Pardon Project aimed at pardoning Pennsylvanians with minor, non-violent marijuana convictions and give them an honest second chance.

Decades of misguided criminalization of marijuana - a substance that 7 in 10 Americans believe should be legal - has cost millions of Americans access to employment, education, and housing. Historically, punishment of non-violent marijuana convictions was ineffective and disproportionately targeted people of color to the point that black Americans are 4 times more likely that their white counterparts to be arrested on a marijuana charge. 

The PA Marijuana Pardon Project will run throughout September and only accessible to those with the charge or Possession of Marijuana (Title 35 Section 780-113 Subsection A31) and Marijuana, Small Amount Personal Use (Title 35 Section 780-113 Subsection A31I). 9/11

This Sunday I will attend Lower Providence's wreath-laying ceremony to honor the tragic loss of life and the valiant acts of first responders we witnessed on September 11th, 2001. As a member of the Air Force, I was stationed in the Pentagon that day and will never forget the brave and skilled reactions of the military personnel who worked to clear the building, assist those who were injured, and secure the premises in the wake of such devastation.

As a nation, we remember all those in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania died that day, as well as all who were injured and all who still carry the emotional wound inflicted on our country. In remembrance of Patriot Day, I invite you to commemorate this solemn occasion.
