Ed Thelander Responds to California-based Seafood Watch “Red List” Designation of Iconic Lobster Industry
As the Republican nominee for Maine’s 1st Congressional District, I've been asked more times than I can remember: Where’s Chellie Pingree? Will she join other Maine elected officials in condemning the California-based Seafood Watch for “red listing” ([link removed]) lobsters?

The argument that lobster gear endangers the whales is based on flawed science and no facts. The last recorded entanglement of a right whale in lobster gear in Maine waters occurred in 2004 — nearly two decades ago — and even then, the whale was released unharmed ([link removed]) .

What lobstermen keep telling me is that Pingree is the least active member of the Maine congressional delegation when it comes to defending them from overzealous regulations. It’s not that she opposes them outright, she’s just not showing up. Strange for someone who lives on North Haven — an island where lobster-fishing is the way most families make a living.

I have spent a good part of the summer swimming between lobster boats ([link removed]) , talking with the men and women who do the heavy work of fishing for lobsters. I’ve listened to their frustrations and pledged that, if elected, I will fight for them like no one they’ve ever seen.
