With Labor Day behind us, the race to win the House and Senate is kicking into high gear.
But as President Biden said last week: This is not a normal midterm year.
The stakes go beyond partisanship. The appalling number of QAnon-supporting, anti-democratic, antisemitic, white nationalist, race-baiting candidates on the ballot -- and with a very real chance of entering Congress -- is nauseating not only to Democrats, but to swaths of Independent and Republican voters as well.
We’ve seen the damage these people can do in Congress. From Pittsburgh to El Paso to Buffalo, we’ve seen the danger their far-right rhetoric poses. We cannot afford to let their ranks grow further. We cannot allow an anti-democratic congressional majority in 2023.
J Street will never offer a dime to anti-democratic candidates. Every day until November 8, we’ll be focused on defeating the threat these candidates pose to our community, our country and our democracy. We’ll be mobilizing our movement, amplifying our message and making the stakes clear.

While I truly believe our democracy has never faced a greater threat in a midterm election, I also believe we’ve never been presented with such a stark choice -- or such a clear roadmap to victory.
The Dobbs decision has broken through to even the most apathetic voters, demonstrating the clear threat to freedom and liberty we face. President Trump’s war on the Justice Department has reminded key voters of everything they hate about Trump’s chaos, exemplifying the threat his movement poses to the rule of law. Last week, President Biden laid out the choice America faces. He invited Democrats, Republicans and Independents to join the fight for democracy -- and polls show it’s resonating.
“Threats to democracy” is now the number one issue for midterm voters.
The battle lines are drawn. The message is clear. It is now up to all of us to rally behind this fight, hammer the message home to voters just tuning in, and make the stakes clear to those who would otherwise sit out a midterm election.
J Street is all in on this fight. Candidates who mock democracy and belittle equality for Americans sure as heck won’t care about them for Israelis and Palestinians. If MAGA lawmakers have an expanded platform to advance their ultra-hawkish, pro-war, anti-diplomacy rhetoric in Washington, it risks further catastrophic consequences both at home and abroad.
