Hi John - Today is International Migrants Day, an opportunity to celebrate the timeless and profound human desire to overcome adversity and seek out a better life for yourself and your family. It is also a call to action to speak out against injustices that are committed against migrants, especially children. An article I read last week[1] highlighted the terrible treatment of migrants at the U.S. southern border. One quote in the piece summed up the situation for me very powerfully: “We speak of ‘immigrant children’ and forget that each one is a child—that boy with a lopsided grin, this tiny nursing baby with a shock of black hair… Close your eyes and picture a child you know, and then imagine them alone, scared, locked up. If each of us did that, we’d have a massive national movement demanding the end to our barbaric practices.” Thankfully, here at Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) we are part of a massive national movement demanding the end to these inhumane practices. And we must keep speaking out. You can join us by sending a message today to your members of Congress asking them to co-sponsor the Stop Cruelty to Migrant Children Act (S. 2113 | H.R. 3918). This important legislation mandates that children who are detained at the southern border are held for as little time as possible and treated with dignity, respect and care. It requires children to receive medical screenings, treatment and basic hygiene supplies. It ensures children get fair and timely action on their cases, and it ends family separation. The decision to uproot your family and leave your home in search of a better life – free from violence and inescapable poverty – is not taken lightly. Harsh treatment at the border is doing nothing to alleviate the conditions that are causing families to migrate to the U.S. How we treat those who arrive at our doors – especially children – is a sign of our character as a nation. We must insist that our government follow U.S. and international law and act with decency and compassion when families and children come seeking asylum. Be part of our movement on this International Migrants Day. Please contact Congress today and ask that they support the Stop Cruelty to Migrant Children Act. Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
