Good morning.
[link removed]
Here's a preview of today's show . Below, read our host's thoughts on what's coming up and some storied you may have missed.

On Tuesday, the same day that Uvalde schools reopened for the start of the fall term, we learned some major news about law enforcement's response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary: Five Texas Department of Public Safety officers have been referred to the state inspector general's office – and two of those officials have been suspended without pay – following DPS' own investigation.

As Tony Plohetski, investigative reporter with KVUE-TV and the Austin American-Statesman, told us Wednesday, there are many unanswered questions about what actions – or inactions – are under scrutiny, but the reports reinforce concerns that many have had about whether more could have and should have been done to save lives.

But investigations of another sort may be leading one of Texas' biggest agencies to
[link removed]
the “brink of collapse,” as Texas' Department of Family and Protective Services faces internal backlash over Gov. Greg Abbott’s directive to investigate families providing gender-affirming care to trans teenagers. We have more on that story in this week’s newsletter, as well as a major update on an iconic Texas landmark: the Battleship Texas. The Houston Ship Channel was shut down last week so that tugs could

tow the dreadnought-class vessel , long rusting away as a tourist site near the San Jacinto memorial, to Galveston for repairs.

And we explore the rollercoaster ride that is

the Texas real estate market right now, with a view toward what the future might have in store. There's much to learn and get caught up on in this week's newsletter, but we hope you'll think of it as a jumping-off point for further reading and listening. You can find more on these stories and the rest of what's making news in Texas at

Is Texas’ housing market finally cooling down?

Housing inventories are rising, and homes are staying on the market for longer. "Basically … nobody can afford as high of a price as they could have two years ago."

Brewster County

Founded: 1887

County seat: Alpine

Population: 9,546

Wide open spaces: Wanna really get away from it all? The West Texas county of Brewster’s a great place to go. At over 6,000 square miles, it’s the largest Texas county by land area – but as of the last census, its population hadn’t topped 10,000 people.

A big draw: Beloved Big Bend National Park spawls across three counties, Brewster included, and into Mexico. Curious where to begin?

You can also visit the Museum of the Big Bend at Sul Ross University in Alpine for an overview. (

We have a soundtrack for your trip too.)

One last thing: Books more your thing? Never fear, Alpine has a

great independent bookstore .
