Hi there,
friend,
—
It feels like our planet has seen a surge of incredibly selfish, destructive behavior in the last few years.
The wealthiest people in the world belch out 50 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.
And yet, in June, the Supreme Court took a sledgehammer to the Environmental Protection Agency’s power to regulate carbon dioxide emissions.
Highly-paid entertainers and pro athletes have used hundreds of thousands of gallons of excess water — up to 10x the typical Los Angeles resident — according to a shocking report from the LA Times. Meanwhile, regular Californians push through a difficult drought and the threat of longer wildfire seasons thanks to climate change.
How do we inspire better behavior?
In our newsletter, website, and in the print magazine, Earth Island Journal tells stories of people who do the opposite, who take action to overcome the destructive behavior of others that’s creating climate challenges.
- When a father-daughter duo in India saw local farmers stuck with debt and land degraded by commodity crops, they trained farmers how to grow indigenous plants from “a magic handful of seeds” native to the area.
- As renewable energy output rapidly increases, workers in the field are advocating for better compensation, benefits, and anti-harassment protections.
- After a lithium mine was approved in Nevada, two activists drove more than 400 miles and set up camp and physically resisted the mine.
No matter how outraged or disappointed we get, we have to work together. We have to summon the guts to keep trying, because we have too much to lose.
The news in Earth Island Journal follows the highest standard of journalism — fairness, accuracy, and intellectual rigor. It’s what you expect from a team with decades of experience finding and reporting the truth.
I believe a better world is possible. I approach my work for the Journal in pursuit of that.
